Mohair is the fleece of the Angora goat. Cottage Farm is the home of the Silvermoor Angora goat herd which was established in 1995. At Cottage Farm we breed Angora goats with fine, kemp-free fleeces. (Kemp is the thick, brittle fibre that causes poor quality mohair to itch). We only use fleeces from our own goats in the items that we sell.

The goats are shorn twice a year. After shearing, the fleeces are sorted and washed. The fleeces are then either hand-spun at Cottage Farm or spun into yarn at a small mill in Wales to our specification. The spun yarn is then hand dyed in our workroom at Cottage Farm after which it is knitted or woven. The majority of the knitting is done in our workroom using basic domestic knitting machines. Due to lack of time a small number of items are knitted in Nottingham on lace knitting machinery.  All item are hand finished in our workroom.


Mohair Products

We produce a range of scarves, wraps, shawls and cowls in fine kid mohair. These range from everyday items to garments for special occasions and heirlooms.

We also make a range of pull-on hats which are light and warm and are suitable for all ages of men and women.

The newest addition to our range is a hand-spun and hand-woven mohair seat pad. These provide insulation in winter while being cool in summer and ideal for people who have to spend a lot of time sitting down.
